Rob personally logged numerous hours and oil collection in Truck #3. The following is his history lesson about #3 and her significance to the success of this company.

A little history on Truck #3:

She has no name. Just "Truck #3". Because 3 is a magic number.

We bought her in the Summer of 2007 sight unseen ("Hi. do you sell vacuum trucks? Ok. We'd like one. Thanks.")

Jim drove her home from Indiana and straight to my house. His first day driving with air brakes, and he went 800 miles.

She was equipped with 4 50' sections of 2" hose.

Originally the hose was not pre-connected. It was piled up in the trays like a septic truck would haul its hose. We used to connect and disconnect after every stop. It made a huge mess.

We had no NewPig or hand wipes.

It used to take us seven or eight hours to wash her. With cold water in my moms driveway.

We used to use her to load tankers of finished product before we could afford pumps. It involved opening the back valve, letting it drip out overnight into buckets and fishing out all the solids with a coat hanger. Then we'd fill her with 1500 gallons, pump out through a screen into the tanker. Four times to make up a load. It used to take HOURS... Wes can fill a tanker with his pump in about 45 minutes.

Her first week in service involved picking up EVERY single account we had. She did the work in one week that it took us a month to do with the Ford van or the old Iveco flatbed.

One time the wiring for the work lights shorted out and go so hot it melted the air brake lines under the dash and Jimmy had to drive home from Philly at midnight with vise grips and duct tape over as many leaks as possible, and she still kept going and stopping. He also did this with the air seat completely deflated too.

Truck #3 bought and paid for herself, and the other trucks. If it wasnt for Truck 3, Waste Oil Recyclers would be nowhere near what we are at the present time. Imagine picking up all the grease we do by hand, and with non self-priming trash pumps and totes in a vans and you can really see the impact she has made.

Many people have ridden along in Truck #3 as a 'seat cover' over the years. Wes began his career at Waste Oil Recyclers as the Assistant Shop Manager last winter and has since taken over the role of Shop Manager. As one of our youngest full-time employees, Wes has embraced his new responsibilities and made a seamless transition to running the shop in a highly organized manner. With August being a record-setting month for waste oil collection, Wes worked countless hours to keep the product moving as necessary.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nvB4AQhLang/TnyYFkfMo1I/AAAAAAAAAE8/OYdV5oHkPUM/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; Pat has been working part time with Waste Oil Recyclers since the summer of 2008 and helped move WOR into our present location in the MoGreena Foundry. Over the past winter Pat has switched from part time handyman to working full time at WOR. Pat drives a collection truck occasionally, and pitches in around the shop when needed, but primarily handles new account set up and service requests in Truck 4 aka Betty.

Recently while Pat was onsite at a new client’s location, the Chef there fell to the ground and began having a diabetic seizure. Pat was quick to react and come to the Chef’s aid preventing possible injury. Pat exhibits superior customer service when coordinating the set up of new accounts of all shapes and sizes. Service Manager, Matty Dickens stated, “Pat could back a fire truck through a grocery aisle”, which is not only a testament to his driving skills, but also an interesting mental picture. Pat will also help out friends’ bands in a jam and does a great job if they call him to fill in for a gig even on short notice and with no rehearsal. Pat loves Mookie, his Jack Russel and working on his new house in his spare time. When Pat is not driving grease-powered Betty, he gets around in his Ford diesel pickup and also owns a vintage BMW motorcycle. WOR is truly lucky to have employees like Pat with diverse skills. And don’t worry; One of the older gals in our fleet, she started out performing setups, service and cubie collections. This workload included dropping off cans and dumpsters to new accounts, replacing older containers with new ones when necessary, and collecting 5-gallon plastic jugs from locations that do not have room for outside containment. Truck 4 has seen some rough times, as she is generally the first truck new drivers would take out and was used by many different people who were constantly readjusting the mirrors and seat with greasy hands.

Last year Truck 4 was outfitted with a 400-gallon vacuum unit adding grease collection to her list of abilities. With the addition of the vacuum unit, service routes could include grease pickups making Waste Oil Recyclers’ fleet even more efficient. The versatility of this truck would seem to be it’s best attribute, however, it just gets better.

This past Fall, Service Manager Matty Dickens joined Waste Oil Recyclers full time and Truck 4 fell under his management. Matty gave this hard working truck a name, Betty, and a checklist of always on-board items adding to her usefulness. Today there is also less mirror and seat shifting in Betty, as Matty, Jeff, and Pat are regularly scheduled to share time driving.

The highlight in Betty’s story is her recent visit our friends at GreenWrench Energy LLC in Lancaster County, PA. She returned to MoGreena a few days later grease-powered and ready to work! The folks at GreenWrench installed an auxiliary fuel tank for us to fill with our fuel-grade waste vegetable oil. The modifications to Betty also include an auxiliary vegetable oil filter and an electric fuel line heater. Betty is a prime example of closing the circle and using local waste as a local fuel. Waste Vegetable Oil, like Betty, is a diverse resource. Waste Vegetable Oil can be used in modified on-road diesel engines, for commercial heating, and as feedstock for Biodiesel production. With her new improvements, Betty will be out on the road working hard and burning grease which significantly reduces her emissions including a 26% decrease in Carbon Monoxide, 39% decrease in particulate matter, and100% Carbon Dioxide offset.

Snowy MoGreena

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;

Epic snow. For children, snow totals and school closings this winter are mounting up to exceed their wildest dreams. Conversely, for many business owners, the recent weather events are nothing short of nightmarish. On a broader scale these events leave me to wonder why there is such harsh weather during a winter that was predicted to be mild compared to the sizeable storms experienced in 2010.

Cold temperatures and increased snowfall are arguments used by many to discredit the existence of global warming even after 2009 was declared the second warmest year in the history of global temperature recording. NASA’s Goddard Institute also reported that the past decade spanning from 2001 thru 2010 was the hottest ever recorded. These facts may be hard to wrap your head around when standing in 2 feet of snow but have been documented: check out NOAA's Arctic Report Card Update for 2010 (http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/reportcard/). Personally, standing in all this snow makes my toes cold, but also prompts me to question why this winter and the last have included one storm after another, and why I didn’t have this many snow days while I was in school.

NOAA scientists have reported that decreased ocean ice has led to the seas absorbing more heat, which in turn effects air currents from north to south and contributes to extended time periods of harsh cold weather moving further south. While this is not the only cause of extreme weather, it is certainly a contributing factor.

What to do about all this weather, well the short game plan is to deal with it, and try to have some fun. In MoGreena Shop Manager Fran made coffee using snow the other morning to mix things up and in-between work there have been a few snowballs flying. The borough has been working hard to keep roads passable and the scenery is amazing. As far as dealing with it, WOR’s dedicated drivers have been combating difficult conditions to get to grease with a bevy of creative solutions including giving up their weekends to collect grease whenever the weather allows. The big picture plan is to keep doing what we do here every day to combat climate change. In 2010 Waste Oil Recyclers offset over 8 million pounds of Carbon Dioxide through processing waste vegetable oil collected into fuel, with plans to make a greater positive impact in 2011. And is doesn’t hurt to dream of spring when the days get longer and the grease flows easier.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Not only did we have lots of fun once again this year educating the public about our business from our tent on the Village Green, but we were also able to give back to the festival (and environment) in a unique way.

The XPoNential Festival's Village Green was powered by Biodiesel purchased from the Philadelphia Energy Co-Op, which was refined by Hero in Erie, PA using Waste Oil Recyclers fuel-grade waste vegetable oil. We were able to provide clean power to our fellow sponsors and vendors throughout the weekend. The Biodiesel was burned in a portable diesel generator provided by Total Rental. The initiative appeared to be a hit with the progressive music fans at the festival, young and old.

Mo-Green-A: A Rust To (Relative) Riches Story

In our first installment, I told you about some of the factors that allowed us to vastly increase the volume of grease we process -- things that made our work easier and more efficient. As I mentioned, we couldn't have accomplished many of them without a place to really call our own. This post is about that place, and that place is now called Mo-Green-A. The name, which might make little sense to you, is a corruption of our municipality's name -- the Borough of Modena, Pennsylvania. (See companion piece.)

These days, it's the property of the former Modena Foundry Co. that we call our home. And when we moved here from next door, the place was so abandoned and overgrown it's hard to believe the transformation it's undergone. There's still plenty to improve every day, but here's a peek at what we've painted onto what we saw as a blank, if dusty, campus:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v7.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D4c2861727b55b09e%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331052843%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D29CB78FA6662A29C7AAC21848E65E5C8345CA713.2798C20DC09BDB7FFA6AAF1865082C6BDB394292%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D4c2861727b55b09e%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D6ewsOgHklUFWlyAnqLGy_5UYp10&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

It's still not shiny and new, but that's the point! The development of Mo-Green-A is spatial recycling at its finest.

Purchasing the foundry buildings gave us a place to prosper, but it also gave us the chance to offer other like-minded companies the same. Those companies are Organic Mechanics, purveyors of fine organic potting soil; Preservation Tree Co., promoting organic tree and plant care; and and Grass Roots Organics LLC., offering organic lawn care and landscaping. Not only are these folks our tenants, but our friends. Often, our work-day can feel as communal as it does commercial. And that's how we like it.

Oh! Modena, Don't You Cry For Me (I Come From Pennsylvania With A Dumpster Full Of Grease)

The municipality our company calls home is the borough of Modena (Moe-DEE-Nuh), Pennsylvania. Haven't heard of it? Don't feel too bad. Several that I consider to be learned residents of our beloved Chester County have said the same. Modena, approximate pop. 610, is located next to Coatesville (if you want to get technical, South Coatesville), and shares an industrial heritage with its larger cousin. Up the hill, Lukens Steel (now owned by conglomerate Arcelor-Mittal) once employed as much as 70% of the county's workforce. Down the tracks of the Wilmington & Northern Railroad in Modena, the primary product was paper, made in the mill that was passed down through the Mode family for years. Interestingly, the paper mill is still operated by Sealed Air Corporation, surviving years after the close of many local mills. Other industries sprang up -- one of the nation's largest scrapyards was once here, later followed by towing, transportation, and foundry businesses.

Make no mistake -- Modena has seen some tough times, like Coatesville, and is no doubt viewed by many as a two-bit poor town, not worth a second glance. (In a 1993 Daily Local News article profiling the borough, a young resident spouts "I hate living in Modena!") But in my eyes, Modena can be a beautiful place. There's the ornate old bridge, the West Branch of the Brandywine creek, rowhouses to rival West Chester, and the still rumbling rails -- these sorts of things can hold excitement when you're raised in seemingly endless suburbia. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but one thing's for sure: Modena has been nothing but accommodating to us as a business, answering our questions and even allowing us to take part in naming the dirt road we share with three other industrial parcels, now known as Phoenix Court. Not only do we appreciate the borough, but they appreciate what we and our partner companies bring to the table: a few jobs for residents, an environmentalist ethic, and a sense of vindication that the borough is still viable for fresh industry!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wasteoilblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/oh-modena-dont-you-cry-for-me-i-come.html' title='Oh! The truth is that the public doesn't hardly know just how busy most of us are here at WOR. It takes a lot to keep our business machine greased. (Pun intended.) Most of us have specific roles with intensive duties that leave little time for us to convey updates to the public. (Look out for profiles of our crew and what they do soon!) But today, and a few more times over this beautiful Pennsylvanian summer 2010, I'm making a concerted effort to tell you just how far we've come through a series of posts on this very blog. In our first installment, I'd like to highlight several key developments.

1. Space

When I began my relationship with WOR in November of 2008, as our first intern, I caught the company in a transitional phase from our old workshop -- some rented square footage in the back of an electrician's warehouse -- to a larger, somewhat decrepit property right next door, formerly home to the Modena Foundry Company. Though we knew fixing the place up would be a sizeable endeavor, it seemed like the most logical step towards growing and streamlining our business. And boy, was it ever! By now, the property ("fixed up" indeed) is known as the Mo-Green-A Foundry Industrial Complex, which we share with several other green businesses. In our next installment, I'll provide a more in depth look at this process of improvement and the storied history of our past business locales.

2. Heating

Though the thought of hot, steamy, used cooking oil is probably less than appealing to the average citizen, heat is essential to what we do. In order to ultimately sell our product to biofuel producers, we have to make sure it's just grease, plain and simple. What do I mean? When our drivers unload their daily catch, it comes to us diluted with water and full of particulate matter. Taking a minute to look back towards science class, we remember a simple principle: Oil is lighter than water. Unfortunately, when our waste oil is jostled around in a multitude of ways, the oil and water take longer to seperate and need a little help. Thusly, we heat our oil to ensure a water-free product. This is done in 3 large metal tanks, with heated water circulated around the outside in PEX tubing under tight insulation. Prior to this innovation, we accomplished separation by ambiently heating the entire tank room in the old shop to 85 degrees, which was somewhat wasteful -- not to mention hot for us toiling greasers!

With heat in high demand, we knew we had to think of a way to accomplish separation without polluting in the process. So why not burn some of the grease we collect? After all, just as diesel engines should run on sustainable fuels, so should oil-burners. (Guess what: "#2 Home Heating Oil" is simply dyed diesel fuel.) A previous posting on this blog highlights our original much-maligned grease-fired furnace, made by INOV8. The old Blue Meanie required much poking and prodding to get her to fire anywhere near dependably. In moving to the new shop, we decided to simply start out right and stop messing around. Enter the new boiler, a CB-500 from Pennsylvania's own Clean Burn. This sucker gives us 500,000 British Thermal Units of heat from our own filtered fuel that smells downright dandy wafting out of the chimney.

3. Filtration

It's hard to imagine a time when our volume of oil was so low that we could afford to filter incoming loads by hand with a micron bag. Enter The Dumpster. The Dumpster is really about as exciting as it sounds, but it has improved efficiency exponentially. Take your average construction-junk-hauling type dumpster and weld some screens into it and you have one mean pre-filter to catch all the super-grody flack that ends up in our clients' collections cans and dumpsters. The dumpster has a top port for our truck's hoses to pump loads in, and a bottom port through which the considerably cleaner grease is pumped towards the aforementioned heating tanks. The only maintenance this big smelly boon requires is a once-or-twice daily scraping and scooping with a shovel, done often by your humble author. Things as horrifying as deceased vermin have been found historically, but the top five items found in the dumpster are: hot dogs, french fries, chunks of congealed fat, rubber gloves, and cigarette butts. These predominantly organic materials are then composted on-site.

But that's not all! Just last week we added two brand new 1/8" filter housings to our pipeline, creating further streamlined filtration after the separation stage.

4. Technology

You might think of those in the sanitation business as unsophisticated characters. We can't speak for anywhere else, but we at WOR are quite cultured. Did you know we have our own Web 2.0 app that we use to manage many aspects of our business? This snazzy interface, designed by Chris Mastrippolito, lets us do many things and spits out some pretty great statistics as well (like gallons picked up per month or year, and how much of that volume came from each state we service.) Among this app's lauded capabilities are: Client Management, and the ability to sort our client list into numerous different geographical categories (City, State, Zip, County, etc); Service Management and the ability to add additional stops to our drivers' routes on the fly (which they then receive on their iPhones); as well as Vehicle Management, used especially to keep track of the dispensing of Biodiesel from our newer on-site fuel tank.

Thanks for reading about a few of the things that have helped us improve our service. Stay tuned...
<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6892515281706511267-1871338948325386497?l=wasteoilblog.blogspot.com'
